o que ouvi enquanto fotografei / what i heard while photographing this
Cheira-me a poesia em livros velhos; toca-me com as mãos enrugadas; sabe-me a torradas feitas nas brasas do lume.
Às vezes visito-me sem aviso e ali me vejo transformada.
EN: The first word you have chosen for this challenge was "saudade". Living outside Portugal and having to create images from a word that only exists in the Portuguese language was the best way to start this project.
Saudade can’t be translated into a singular English word. Maybe you can associate it with loss, sadness or nostalgia, but it’s more complex than that.
For me, saudade isn't always a sad or bitter feeling, but it always gets me melancholy. It smells like poetry in old books; touches me with wrinkled hands; tastes like toast made on the embers of the fire. In these images, I added minor imperfections: they are the passage of time, which rushes through us without asking permission. I also played with the double exposure because saudade takes me back to those who have already left. In longing we stay close, always close. But never close enough.
